Is there a federal solar tax credit in 2026?

For homeowners: no.

The IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Verified October 2026 on IRS.gov.

When was your system placed in service?

  1. In 2025 or earlier

The IRS describes a 30% credit for qualified property installed 2022 through December 31, 2025. It is claimed on IRS Form 5695. Ask a tax professional whether you qualify.

  2. In 2026 or later

The homeowner credit is not available. Plan your budget without it. Be careful with any offer that still promises a 30% homeowner credit.

What it means for each way to pay

Cash

You own the system. Without the homeowner credit, compare the full installed price.

Loan

You own it. Read whether the loan assumed a credit-funded paydown—some older offers did.

Lease or PPA

The provider owns it. Business credits are separate rules for the owner. Whether that changes your price depends on the provider—ask, and read the contract.

Business and third-party owner credits follow different IRS rules and dates. We do not say any benefit applies to you or passes to you. This page is general education, not tax advice. Laws can change; check IRS.gov and a tax professional.
